why are we here?

For too many years now, the University has contributed to the displacement and systematic killing of the Palestinian people, the stealing of Palestinian land, the erasure of Palestinian culture, knowledge, and identity, and the system of apartheid practiced by israel against Palestinians. The wealth and prestige of the University stems directly from their role in the British empire and its disastrous colonial legacies, including the Cambridge and Oxford men who authored the Balfour declaration in 1917, ceding Palestinian land to the Zionist project.
In the present day, the University of Cambridge has over £46 million in defence industry partnerships, including studentships, research projects, and named buildings and research centres, contributing to the manufacture of weapons that israel have used to kill Palestinians. Through academic, research and exchange programmes, the University maintains close links with israeli institutions, which endorse and uphold israel's genocide of the Palestinian people and violations of international law.

On 6th May 2024, we set up the Cambridge Encampment for Palestine on King's Parade. Our presence applied pressure on the university administration to accede to our demands, while creating a vibrant community space embodying our solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Following the university's statement of commitments, released on 17th July 2024, we decamped after 100 days of action. We now continue to hold the university to account through a student-led taskforce we elected to work with the administration towards our goals, and through continued actions, events, and campaigns. We also seek to build awareness and solidarity with Palestine throughout the university and city of Cambridge.
We are here to ensure that the University of Cambridge discloses, divests, reinvests, and protects as per our demands, and we will not rest until this is achieved.
